OYOM Terms of Service

Effective date: September 7, 2026

Welcome to OYOM (OneYearOneMedia, at oyom.app): a free app where friends send each other exactly one media recommendation (“prescription”) per year. OYOM is built and run by a single individual developer in New Zealand as a non-commercial project. These terms keep things fair and safe for everyone.

1. Accepting these terms

You accept these terms when you create an account, since signup requires it. If you don’t agree with them, don’t use OYOM. By accepting, you also acknowledge the Privacy Policy, which is part of these terms and explains what data OYOM handles, including that profiles are public.

2. Who can use OYOM

You must be at least 13 years old. If you’re under 18, make sure a parent or guardian is okay with you using OYOM. If we learn an account belongs to someone under 13, we’ll remove it.

3. Your account

• Sign in with Google (or, on iOS, Sign in with Apple once available). OYOM never sees or stores a password.
• One account per person. Don’t create accounts to impersonate someone else, evade a block or ban, or game the mechanics.
• You’re responsible for what happens on your account. If you think someone else has accessed it, secure your Google/Apple account and contact us.

4. What OYOM is (and its game mechanics)

OYOM lets you send one media prescription per friend per year and track whether prescriptions get completed. Some things to know up front:

• Public profiles. Your profile (username, picture, join date, your word score, friends list, and prescription history) is visible to anyone on the internet, without login. That is deliberate.
• Your word. A health score based on your completion rate (“your word”, starting at 100 and capped there). It goes down when prescriptions fail.
• Locked in amber. If your word reaches zero, your account becomes permanently locked. This game mechanic is irreversible; by using OYOM you accept it. (You can still delete a locked account.)
• OYOM may change how the mechanics work over time; we’ll aim to be sensible and communicate meaningful changes.

5. Your content

You keep ownership of everything you post: prescriptions, messages, your profile. So we can run the app, you grant OYOM a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, display, and transmit your content as needed to operate the service. Because profiles are public, that includes displaying your profile content publicly on the web. The license ends for content you delete, except where it’s already been shared with others (e.g. a prescription you sent lives on the recipient’s history too) or brief persistence in backups.

Only post content you have the right to post.

6. Acceptable use: zero tolerance

OYOM is a friendly app between friends, and we intend to keep it that way. OYOM does not allow objectionable content or abusive behavior. That includes, without limitation:

• harassment, bullying, threats, or hate speech
• sexually explicit content, or any content sexualizing minors
• violent, gory, or shocking content
• impersonation, spam, scams, or misleading content
• posting someone’s private information without consent
• illegal content or promoting illegal activity
• attempting to hack, disrupt, scrape at scale, or abuse the service or its APIs
• inviting people by email who you don’t know, or using invites to spam

This applies to everything you can write or set: usernames, profile pictures, prescriptions and their links, and messages.

7. Moderation, reporting, and blocking

• You can report content or users, and block users, from within the app. Basic content filtering also runs on user content.
• Reports are reviewed promptly: objectionable content will be removed and offending users ejected, typically within 24 hours of a report.
• OYOM may remove any content, and suspend or permanently terminate any account, that violates these terms, without prior warning where the violation is serious.
• To report anything you can’t report in-app, or to appeal a moderation decision, email oneyearonemedia@gmail.com.

8. Invitations

When you invite someone by email, you’re telling us you know them and think they’d want the invite. Their email is handled as described in the Privacy Policy, and they can have it removed by contacting oneyearonemedia@gmail.com.

9. Third-party media data

Media titles, posters, and links come from third-party catalogs (TMDB, AniList, MyAnimeList/Jikan, TVmaze, OMDb, IGDB, RAWG, Deezer, iTunes, Open Library, Google Books). That data belongs to its respective owners, may be inaccurate, and links lead to sites OYOM doesn’t control.

10. The honest disclaimer

OYOM is a free hobby project run by one person, and the legal fine print says so:

• No warranty. OYOM is provided “as is” and “as available”, with no guarantees it will be reliable, error-free, or always online.
• It may change or shut down. Features may change or the whole service may be discontinued. If OYOM shuts down, reasonable effort will be made to give notice, but no compensation is owed for a free service.
• Data loss is possible. Backups exist, but don’t treat OYOM as the only home of anything you’d be sad to lose.
• Limitation of liability. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer isn’t liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of OYOM, and total liability is capped at NZD $100. Nothing in these terms excludes rights that can’t be excluded under applicable law, including New Zealand consumer law (such as the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993) where it applies.

11. Termination

You can stop using OYOM anytime, and delete your account at the bottom of the /knobs page (in the app or on the web). We can suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, as described in section 7, or as part of discontinuing the service. Sections that by their nature should survive (content licenses for already-shared content, disclaimers, liability limits) survive termination.

12. Changes to these terms

These terms may change. For material changes, we’ll update the effective date and give notice in the app or by email; continuing to use OYOM after that means you accept the new terms. If you don’t accept them, stop using OYOM and delete your account.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand, and disputes belong to the New Zealand courts, without limiting any consumer rights you have where you live.
